In the Memphis City School District (MCS), students may attend a school in their attendance area or one of the 37 optional schools with curriculum that focuses on the fine arts, college prep or theme-based programs. Students may also apply to attend a school outside their attendance area (called intradistrict choice) or a charter school.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
