The Davis Waldorf School teaches children to be independent thinkers, and connects them deeply with beauty in all it's forms. Responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship, become important concepts to the students. There is a gentleness and sincere caring amoung the students, between the classes, and the children are blessed to have the same teacher for the duration of their years at the school. This a great benefit to both the teachers and the students. The class functions as a close knit group, with empathy and understanding. I can't say enough about the quality of the teachers, or the curriculum. It is an absolutely wonderful and magical place of learning. I am so happy my grandchildren have gone to this school. It has been a wonderful influence on their character, their frienships, and their personal self esteem.
We moved to Davis for the excellent public schools. But once in the system we found them to be too competitive and the kids were over worked and stressed out. We moved them to DWS and they are content and happy and they LOVE to learn. Best thing we ever did.

My kids, now in 2nd and 5th grades, have attended DWS since kindergarten. They are the kind of kids you like to have around. The can listen and respond, they are funny and creative, considerate and responsible. I think I'm blessed to have children like this, and I think it has helped tremendously that their school fosters these traits in all the children. Most of their classmates are similar to them in these respects. Their curriculum has been varied every year, always sourced from art or nature or cultural history (norse mythology, old testament stories, ancient egypt, etc.) They don't just learn about Norse Mythology -- the Norse Mythology is the context in which they learn math, spelling, reading, writing. They are absorbed in the topic and the learning just happens. I also appreciate that the school doesn't make hourly time requirements of all families. Each family does what it can.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD just before starting kindergarten at Waldorf. His teachers never treated him diffeently and now, going into 2nd grade, he is wonderfully bright and social and has developed much better self control. The Waldorf philosohpy of educating the whole child has been a God-send for us. On the downside, the administration of the school is a bit scattered and ineffective. This is made up for by the very active parents. Parents head up all committes at the school and run the annual auction and Mayfaire. Overall, this is a wonderful school.
