Both of my daughters attended Amistad in the KOG (gifted) program. My oldest is now in middle school and the younger one is currently in 4th grade. I have volunteered quite a bit at the school and can say that the principal, teachers and staff all seem very committed to a good education and school experience for ALL of the students. If my daughters had not been in the gifted program, they would have attended Sunset View Elementary, and in fact, they each attended there for one year prior to being accepted into KOG. While Sunset View is a good school, I must say that the gifted program offered so much more that there is no comparison. It was simply a much better fit. I agree that any mediocre scores are a result of transient populations and language barriers.

When reviewing school performance, be aware that this school houses two extremes within one building. There is a full-time gifted program (one classroom per grade, 2 - 5)serving academically gifted students from the entire district. The remainder of the school serves the local neighborhood, with a high percentage of bilingual and migrant students. I have found that the school works very hard (in both areas) to provide challenge, support, and inclusion. My sons attend the gifted program, which provides more interest and challenge than they have been offered in other schools (public or private). As far as I can tell, the entire school provides a wholesome, stimulating, supportive environment for students and their families. All correspondence is printed in English & Spanish, and at least one classroom in each grade is bilingual. In my opinion, poor average scores reflect a transient population more than the quality of instruction.
