Excellent school with excellent magnet programs for advance/honor students. Excellent teachers. Do not go by the test scores, this is a 3, 500 students school. Such a big school and so many students it is hard to compete with the smaller nearby high schools. But, their program would definately prepare your child for the most challenging/competitive and pretigious universities.
The school lacks any administrative control of the curriculum. Each teacher teaches what he or she wants totally disregarding what they the assigned curriculum is. Some teachers are good other aren't. No administrator checks on them. All the administration seems to focus on is that the classes are under control by the teachers and the FCAT
As incoming PTSA President, I am very proud to be a Gables parent and have my children attend CGHS. My children range from ESE to Honors/AP classes and I find the teachers to be of the most excellent quality. Our principal is dedicated, driven, caring and involved. Gables is a GREAT school. Yes, we have an ethnically diverse large population, things are not perfect, but they are GOOD! Sports, extracurriculars, security, dresscode, it's all there. Our weakest area is Parent Involvement. Let me encourage any parent reading this to become involved at your school! The importance is beyond words. Go to your PTSA meetings. Learn what is going on. Go to parent nights. Read the school newspaper, the web site. Communication is there. Use it. At Gables, sign up for our Parent EMail list. Take time to find out. This is for your child, your school. Be there!
