There are so many things to love about John Gill: the committed teachers, the arts programs, the involved parents, and what still strives to be a creative teaching style. However, I've become disillusioned with the new forced teaching methods. In my opinion, Houghton Mifflin is a very poor bandaid for the school's academic woes. I think the baby has been thrown out with the bathwater despite the teachers' attempts to keep the best of the K-2 program intact where so many of our kids did succeed. I fear that what made John Gill so special and successful will continue to dwindle. I don't appreciate our kids being guinea pigs to test out a standard that, in my opinion, will result in lower achievement for the kids who previously thrived.

Our son has been at J. Gill since Kindergarten and is now in 2nd grade. He has been with the same teacher the whole time. We think very highly of her and very much appreciate how in touch she has been with our son's learning style and success, but more than that - feeding his love of learning. As with any school the teacher is a huge part of the experience. He has been in a combined K-2 classroom and that has worked well for him. The new principal, Amanda Kemp seems very invested and is taking charge of the school. I love everything she has contributed so far - 'character awards' weekly, she's vigilant about campus security, has protected the multi-age program and is re-doing the main office, etc. so it actually looks dynamic and professional.

My daughter is a first grader in the K-2 program at John Gill and has really thrived there. I have been very impressed with the new principal so far this year. The communication to parents has increased, the campus looks much more organized and the teachers seem happier this year. The PTA is great and really bends over backwards to help and to include other parents. I think the school was struggling for awhile, but through the partnership of involved parents and committed teachers, the future is bright for John Gill and the students there.
