This is a well run public elementary school, and the new principal, Linda Parker, has the energy and enthusiasm to address and tackle the challenges. As with any school, the quality of the teacher(s) has the most direct impact on each student's learning. The location is beautiful, the student body is very positive + overall well behaved. Lots of the extra programs + activities to enhance students' experience. Very solid PTA and SSV Foundation that fund and staff extra and needed programs to enhance the educational experience. A plus in art, PE and basics= math and language arts. Awesome garden at the school, but overall the science curriculum is lacking. The 'Everyone a Reader' program is helping low performing students. Unfortunately SSV is a very good public school that has yet to address the unmet needs of each individual student--teaching 'at the grade level' in many cases is still 'old school'
My child is currently attending Sunset View and is having a great school experience. Many parents do volunteer, and it is much appreciated. With the budget shortfalls, it's nice that so many parents come in and offer their own 'class enrichment'. This school is what you make it - you can either sit on the side lines and hope for the best, or get in there, contribute, donate and help when needed to make it a great experience for every child in that classroom. The PTA & Foundation have really contributed a lot to this school, especially this year - saving the library, new grass for the Kindergarten play area, and much more. This is, in my opinion, one of the last great 'neighborhood' schools.

This is the public school solution for those who can not afford or do not want to incur the cost of a private education. A great location..... Understandably, there are parents who are involved and those who are not; The results are most noticable in the behavior of the children, level of respect for themselves, others and somewhat lagging social skills of the students being 'raised' by the public education system. The limitations of the state funded school system preclude ( or excuse ) teacher involvement in anything other than approved lesson plans for the day. Disruptive students seem to, ' have a right' to express themselves with little or no regard for the others they affect in the classroom. Private education is recommended unless you like the view. You'll get little else.

All three of my children have or are attending Sunset View. It is a wonderful school. Every teacher we have had, has made a life impact on my children. The parent involvement and support enables the school to provide 30 minutes of Spanish a day for every child (with full-time spanish faculty), monthly Art curriculum, an up to date computer lab, music, wonderful activities, environment and community. It has been the place where memories are made for each of my children. Because of the school's location on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, and the excellent academic environment, the school attracts some of the best teachers and administration in the district. It truly has been a privilege for my children to attend this school.
