Doyle has a very tight bond with the UCSD campus which is only a couple of miles away. Grad students, visiting scholars, faculty, and staff send their kids here. As a result, Doyle is made up of an extremely diverse group of kids, motivated parents, and better educated parents. The diversity is a mixed blessing. The cultural diversity boosts scores, but scores are empirical and often blind (a scholar from Japan chose to send his son to Doyle because of proximity to UCSD). The diversity totally crushes any sense of community. The same visiting scholars and grad students move on quickly. Each year, we see some of my son's best friends come and go. Language obstacles and the additional required teacher resources are another concern. If you do send your student here, pay attention to the Gifted and Talented Education program (GATE).
I do not reallly understand all the negative reviews. Both my children (Grade 1 and 4) love their school and their teachers. Both teachers are very qualified and easy to talk to. As a volunteer, I see how they deal with the incredible diversity and the different needs of the children with wisdom, with a great deal of sensitivity. The librarian is great! Wonderful fieldtrips! There could be more afterschool/arts programs.
I'm somewhat shocked at some of these reviews. I have two kids attending Doyle and they love it. I have open communication with their teachers and feel I am well aware of the activities going on there. It is a big school ~800 students. It is very diverse. There is strong community involvement. They have a wonderful library and librarian. Both of my children are excelling in their learning. My family feels welcome and happy with Doyle.
