Montebello Elementary School

This is my son's first year attending Montebello and overall, it's been a good year for him. His classroom has been a combination class of a total of about 10 students. The teacher bases her studies on the Houghton Mifflin system. She's a very caring and thoughtful person who also helps individuals who require more attention (Special Education studies). Music and PE is enjoyed by the students twice a week. We, parents, have seen about 4 small musical performances put on by the students. This has involved singing, dancing and some simple musical instruments. Every month, a 'House Challenge' event happens where the students participate in friendly competition in academics and sports. The groupings include K-6, so it encourages interaction between the grade levels. Parents are encouraged to assist at the school during class time and School Site Council Meetings. We have bilungual translations available for the largely Hispanic community to encourage participation.

Excellent student teacher ratio allows individual student's needs to be met whether children need extra help with certain subjects or if they work at a more advanced grade level. The children have music and PE programs and they do special events for parents (eg holiday program). I was originally concerned about having my kindergartener interacting with 6th graders, but all of the children are considerate and supportive of one another. One of the biggest downsides in the school is the mix of english speaking and spanish speaking families makes parent interaction more difficult.

Montebello School is a four-room K-6 elementary located in the Santa Cruz mountains between Cupertino and Saratoga. Overcrowding is not an issue; with under 50 students, most rooms teach two grades. Currently, the four teachers cover K, 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6. This elementary school goes to 1892 when the area was primarily agricultural. Today, the student body reflects the old and the new, with winegrower s children studying alongside the kids of tech professionals. Approximately a third of the students are bilingual. The community is sufficiently upscale (think Woodside) that private school is not a cost issue for many parents. Still, most choose Montebello for its safety, individualized attention and natural environment. The teachers are enthusiastic, with a high level of community involvement.
