This a great school overall. Parents are involved and teachers are responsive to students and parents. Academics are focused on State requirments (like everywhere else), but the teachers are still able to keep their classes interested. Extracurricular activities include art, music, PE, computer lab, and library. One thing that was a bit problematic was the lack of a school funded lunch program. A volunteer parent organization takes it upon themselves to add a hot lunch a couple time a week. Gym doubles as cafeteria. Kids performed music programs and dance programs that were nicely put together. Sports is primarily outside school sponsership. The LA school system is becoming overcrowded and the additions of the portable trailer type classrooms are necessary. Last year a Mountain playground was taken down to add more classroom space. My children enjoyed their time at Mountain and I believe that they are well prepared for future grades.

Academically, this school is top notch. Because of the demographics in Los Alamos, an emphasis is placed on science and math. Music, Library, PE, Computers, and Art classes are attended once a week, with the music program being particularly strong. Lots of Type A parents pushing thier kids, which can be a problem, particularly if your child is content to learn at their own rate. Kids who would be good students in most other schools can encounter some inferiority based on the accomplishments of some of the kids who have been pushed from before preschool. The infrastructure throughout the Los alamos School District needs to be improved dramatically.
