I agree that the school is clean, safe, lots of parental involvement, etc. 6th grade was terrific, and I was quite impressed with the 8th grade project. But there was next to no hands-on science in 7th grade (all kid-graded assignments, mostly computer work in the classroom, no actual laboratory work), any discussions of Darwin and evolution were skipped entirely because they 'weren't necessary'. American History was very, very biased politically (toward the right). My child felt very out of place and uncomfortable because we are Democrats and voted for Obama. She was afraid at times to raise her hand and participate in classroom discussions for fear of being ostracized. If politics are to be discussed in the classroom, it should be done in an open-minded, unbiased, and sensitive manner that respects and encourages all points of view...not just the point of view of the teacher, even a nice one.

I attended this school and loved everything about it. There may not be many sport programs, but the teachers are amazing.

A terrific school with high academic standards and dedicated teachers and staff. The school environment is small and supportive. Every child is known by name, there is no getting lost in the shuffle at DIS. The 8th grade project is on the level of a college thesis, it's amazing what 13 year olds can accomplish when challenged and supported. The only area that needs improvement is the extra curricular activities, which have been gutted in the last few budget crises. Basketball is the only sport, gone are volleyball and soccer -- a shame. Overall, I couldn't be happier. The quality of education my children are receiving is on par with that of a private school in a large city except in a safe, rural setting.
