I enjoyed participating in this school, thru pta, odyssey of the mind, and working with the teachers

I do not understand how this school system gets away with having two schools 300 feet apart with such complete opposite racial make-ups. They are so close the two schools share a common parking lot. Islands is predominantly black and Marshpoint is predominantly white. The test scores at Marshpoint are 'through the roof' while Islands Elementary struggles to meet state standards. When Marshpoint was under construction, we were told that Marshpoint would be K-2 and Islands would be 3-5. But somewhere along the way the political force of the parents on the eastside islands managed to manipulate the situation. So now ten years later here we sit with a inner city black school 300 feet from a suburban white school. And if any Marshpoint parent tries to dispute my position, then they can prove me wrong by exercising an M to M transfer and enroll their child at Islands.

Having many friends attending other area schools gives us the opportunity to compare experiences and our child is not being exposed to the same amount of content material. We have expressed concerns that our child is not being challenged due to the lack of homework and slow pace in the classroom and were told the other families couldn't work with their chldren at home and not to worry, our child would meet the standards by the end of the year. The children are not being given the opportunity to reach their potential. Might this be why the majority of the students merely 'meet' the standard, but few exceed it (based on CRCT scores)? My offers to help out in the classroom have been ignored. Also, we are discouraged by the negative atmosphere in the classroom, much punishment, little positive reinforcement. We would move if we could.

Islands has a dedicated staff. But a warning to prospective home buyers, the majority of the students do NOT live in the Islands area. Most are bussed in from low income areas. This is not a criticism of those students but the preponderance of low income students means that there is minimal parent participation because the parents have to work and don't have the free time to volunteer at the school. But the school that is located just 300 feet away, Marshpoint, is made of children who live in the Islands area.
