Ok...I've had 3 children at this school...one is now in Middle School and 2 still here and I love Glenkirk. I'm not saying it's perfect, but whenever there is something that I don't feel good about, I have always been welcomed to come and speak to the teacher or the administration and they have been up front and helpful. Yes, there is a lot of emphasis on test scores, but that isn't coming from our school - those pressures come from the county and the state and those same issues are going on at other local elementary schools. I also volunteer a great deal and feel that I can make a statement in appreciation of the principal and vice principal!

The way that I measure school excellence is whether or not the school's environment is producing the top leaders of tomorrow and I firmly believe that the leadership at this school is not investing enough in creating that environment. I also volunteer and ensure that I am an active participant in the school and it's because of my participation that I can make this statement. At Glenkirk it is all about teaching for test scores, but no innovation, no teaching to create critical thinking, no teaching to facilitate the enjoyment of learning. It is all about getting the information to pass the SOL's, which in itself is teaching for average learning not advance learning. I think we are doing our kids a disservice. Only through the right leadership will teachers get the support and inspiration to teach outside the box, and leadership at this school is lacking.

We moved into the area last fall from another state. While I have tried for the past year to give the school administration the benefit of the doubt for the past year, I have concluded that the school maintains its credibility in large part due to the parents involvement and support instead of the adminstrative capabilities of the current principal. I am an involved parent. I volunteer time, get to know my kids' teachers, attend school functions, etc. I am not impressed - to say the least. And while I am impressed by the hard-working teachers, I think the curriculum is watered down and not at all challenging. Anyone can teach to a test so test scores do not impress me much. Overall - the school is OK. Not great, but definitely not at the bottom.

I'm gogglel-eyed amazed at the complaints posted. Notice that those who report being involved rate favorably. Perhaps unhappy parents are involved on a volunteer basis, but if not - it seems unfair to judge this school and its leaders if you're not supporting it. I've seen Mrs. Gilkerson's car out in the lot on holidays - not a another soul around. I've seen her there for volunteer landscaping (have a picture of her in a wheelbarrow). I've seen her frequently greet students in the halls by name. I know of at least one wheelchair 'race' she had with one of our disabled kids. I've seen the staggering demands on her time as she's been available to over 1,000 students & families. She has a fierce loyalty for her teachers and love for the kids. She, Mrs. Brumby's and the teachers deserve nothing but praise - not armchair quarterbacks!'
