This is the best middle school in Volusia County. The principle Mamie Oatis is awesome and her staff/faculty are the best. They are structured, hands on, concerned about my childrens safety and education. Ms. Oatis is very hands on and is at practically every function the school holds. She is involved in the community and well respected by business owners along with staff, parents, students and the district. She has taken that school and turned it around and doesn't expect her staff to do anything she is not willing to do. Her A/P totally rock and its a pleasure to have thme in my childrens life. If I could give 10 stars I would but only five are allowed.
Ms. Oatis is the most hands on principal I have ever seen. She attends every event possible and is always encouraging to the students. The teachers are supportive and helpful. Discipline is very effective at this school. They are firm and proactive in telling students what they expect from them before an event, as well as enforcing discipline during an event. The students have a wide variety of after school clubs, their 8th grade trip to DC was well chaperoned and planned, and they held a great graduation program complete with a dance that welcomed not only students, but their families as well. This is a school where a kid can still be a kid, and opportunities abound for everyone, regardless of social status.
Southwestern is one of the best schools around! I drop my kids off knowing they are safe. They have excellent opportunities for kids to bring up grades or maintain them. The Principal (Mamie Oatis) is excellent! The wheel (art, home EC, technology, and computers) are great classes with excellent opportunities! They also have music(band or chorus). There is little parent involvement as far as helping with lunch but they are always willing to come speak to the kids. They even have a school basketball team! Keep up the excellent work!
