Unhappy about the quality of education my kids are getting from this school. More discipline is need to turn in and learn more.

I am a former student of AHS. I had a fantastic experience and was well prepared for college. A factor in success is student makeup. My years at AHS happened to see one of the most successful classes to come through the AHS system. Kids were concerned about grades and school, as well as athletics and college. Overall, I think most of the HS experience is what you are willing to put into it. If a student doesn't want to learn, no one can make him. Conversely, a well motivated student will succeed anywhere. Concerning safety, when I was a student we had your usual fights, but nothing that was out of the ordinary for any large school. We did have a great disciplinarian, but that was back when parents didn't make excuses for their kids and actually let faculty do their jobs.

I am also a former Teacher of Alice High School. The teachers work very hard at helping the students, and will stay till all hours (without extra incentives) if needed. There is a high turnover with the staff, because in my opinion and others, that the administration doesn't care much about the overall picture, only what looks good to the the state, an on paper. Discipline is not handled well, but they do not have a disciplinarian, also for a school of their size...overhead is way to much..to many leaders, but not enough areas covered...plenty of state and specail fund are available, but the $$ is not spent well. Alice has a great Sports program, and Tons of extra activities, which in some is a detrament to some of the students...to much to do, and not enough time to finish work....Large 9th grade classes....small senior classes...thank you...Alice has potential!

I am a former teacher at Alice High School who wishes to retain anonymity. Alice High School has tremendous potential; unfortunately, it also has tremendous problems. A good look at the city reveals one source: apalling living conditions. Naturally, the students, whom I came to adore, bring this into the classroom. Rather than create a sanctuary where students felt safe and were encouraged to discover themselves, administration (many of whom were well-meaning and did try to make a difference) used the external conditions I alluded to above as a cop out. Thus, the circle of helplessness and ineffectuality continues. Clearly, this represents an abnegation of responsibility on the part of the school's and the district's leadership. Parents rightly should expect more.
