Living history days - Our students learn life lessons about historical times, places and people by having lessons then recreating the particular period or place. First grade is Asian / Pacific Islander, second grade is recreating the first Thanksgiving, third grade is the rancho days of old California, Mexico and the Western US, fourth grade is the contributions of African Americans from the Gold Rush to today and fifth grade is Colonial America. Watching the students prepare, then "live" in the period is an absolutely amazing experience for all.

My daughter is in second grade at Joaquin Miller and we have had a great experience learning and growing in this community of active parents and teachers. There is a large selection of enrichment programs offered for all grades, which includes music, dance, science, sports, chess, foreign languages, and drama. We have been satisfied with the quality of the teachers and curriculum. Each child is encouraged to learn within their own style and expected to participate and achieve results.

As a graduate of J. Miller, I feel I got the best education available in the Oakland Unified School District. Happy to see things are still strong at J. Miller.
