I have witnessed the remarkable teaching and learning this school community provides. What students are learning and happily so is how to be a caring and productive member of a community of learners. There is a school code/expectation of learning and of behavior. Students are engaged and engaging because of the open structure, but let me assure you there is structure, one that is known and flexible as needed.

This school has leaky ceilings, no classroom walls, no hot lunch. But this school does have really great teachers!

I have had 2 children go through Seymour school, and the trick is to know your child. It is a one room building with partitians only 6 feet high between the classes and hallways, and the library in the middle. There are 2 fully enclosed classrooms, band room, gym/cafeteria/auditorium, and front offices. The draw back from this open layout is that kids can't fully get into what they are doing without considering the other classes. Clapping has been substituted with the deaf handraising. Consider 'inside recess' because of weather. Does the whole school adjust to having recess at the same time? No. Half the classes are trying to relax, while half are still in the middle of study. My first child was always distracted by who she saw walking in the hallway and what the other classes were doing. That improved the following year by putting her in an enclosed classroom.
