Our 10.5 year old son has been enrolled since Kindergarten as is our nephew of the same age. We continue to be VERY pleased with all aspects of Sedona Charter School and plan for him to attend through the 8th grade.

My 12 year old son attended 6th grade last year and is in 7th this year. The most impressive part of their program is the teaching of self-responsibility regarding conduct and assignments. The approach is not disciplinarian, but is based on the sense of self-worth resulting from being responsible. There is nothing like watching my son and his classmates be self-motivated to finish assignments, even when they come over after school to play. Academically, my son receives as much challenge as he is ready to take on. Teachers raise the level of expectations in accordance with each student's growing mastery of a subject. Parent and community involvement is considerable: each parent is expected to volunteer 50 hours each year. I was significantly involved in class activities last year, but this year of adolescence requires more hands-off from parents. There is not much of structured sports, music, or art, but plenty of extracurricular activities.

I love this school because it is small, there is a high teacher-student ratio, and the teachers are so very very dedicated. The campus is gorgeous. Because the curriculum is individualized, the kids really learn a lot, regardless of their natural academic talent. I feel very lucky that we have such a wonderful free school right here in Sedona.
