Columbus Elementary School is located in one of the poorest neighborhoods of New Rochelle. This area contains overcrowded housing for large numbers of poor, minority residents, many of whom are newly arrived to this country. There are 770 students in attendance at Columbus: 73% are Hispanic, 12% African-American, 12% Caucasian and 3% Asian. Eighty percent (80%) of the students at Columbus receive free or reduced lunch compared to 38% in the District and 28% in the state. Approximately 43% of the school register is limited English proficient as compared to 11% of the district-wide student population and 7% in the state. Ninety-two percent (92%) of LEP students at Columbus School come from low-income households. Yet, we are also a school that takes these very same students to compete in the National Scholastic Chess Tournament where we have placed as high as 6th place nationally. The percent of students that meet or exceed state standards on NY s English Language Arts, math, science and social studies exams range from the high-70s to the high 90 s. As an example, the state average for students passing the recent 3rd, 4th and 5th grade ELA exam was 68% whereas 76% of Columbus students succeeded. Similarly, the state average for students passing the recent 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Math exam was 76% whereas 86% of Columbus students succeeded. Columbus School ensures that classroom and school-wide activities meaningfully engage and excite students, while also involving parents in their children s education. Our focus is on instruction not data. We have a singular unitary goal: Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
The staff is wonderful however, it seems to have a select group that is favored over the others. I wasn't impressed with the Terc math program nor its facilitator.

This school has CILA and Bilingual classes. It has a gifted program and ESL. They have more technology than other schools in New Rochelle, like a SmartBoard in every class and in the cafeteria. The older students work with architects and designers to have EXPO. And they have a Literacy Fair by the younger students. They have the highest math scores in the district and the students do very well when they go on to middle school and the high school.

This school is one of the poorest schools in New Rochelle. The District is well aware of this matter and yes they are very racist. After they fill their 'quotas' they over pack this small school and offer minimal services compared to the other elementary schools. I am not in any way putting down the staff because they do try with what they have but let's face reality the Board of Ed is made of arrogant 'white collar' people. I am not the first to say this and notice this. So if you want your child being in a class thats not even an ESL or CILA class but the teacher still has to waste her time by explaining things twice (in English and Spanish) then this school might be for your child.
