There are some awesome teachers there who see that my son is a hard worker despite his dyslexia. They have worked with him and have allowed him extra time to take assignments home to work on them.
Elementary schools WERE fantastic, but with new 'consistent curriculum' the hands of all gifted teachers have been tied. Very few advanced courses to prepare for High School. Keep looking- East Grand Rapids, Forrest Hills, GR City Middle High are far better choices. Just watch out for administrative changes, districts can change very quickly.
The Middle School has a very strong parent organization, strong staff to parent communication venue - including the Infinite Campus Parent Portal where parents can log in over the internet, view grades, comments, missing assignments, email teachers, etc. Written progress reports, monthly newsletters are mailed to all parents; councelors are always available to help students in need - all they have to do is ask. Teachers also notify admin staff of potential at risk students and are continually receiving training and directives on noticing students who may be having peer, parent or other problems. In the past year, student and parent surveys have been returned and multiple steps to make improvements have been implemented. Site improvements have also made the building more inviting and nurturing for the kids.
Elementary schools are fantastic, but things change drastically at the middle level. Kids become a small pebble in a big ocean. Staff do not notice students and do not inform parents. There are a great deal of opportunities for students available, but there is no working with those who are not highly motivated. Great potential in the school, but majority of the staff are not motivated to work with students and parents. Very impersonal.
