I am a new parent to Aveson. My daughter is a freshman and just starting on her journey. I was very impressed by the staff and the children that led us around the school when we went for the open house. I have copied from their web site the list of Guiding Principals that I was pleasantly surprised to hear students and parents saying them at a recent event. Guiding Principles: Vision means seeing what could be and what will be and living the difference. There is no such thing as too much truth. How you say it is as important as what you say. When identifying problems, offer strategies and solutions. Everyone's time is valuable. Your commitment is to make others around you successful. Our growth together requires us to grow individually. Integrity is everything.

Aveson has been a terrible disappointment for our family. While a number of the teachers, especially in the K-5 cadre, are truly exceptional, it is questionable whether they will stay with the school long enough for a community to develop. I blame the administration; they give very little real support to their teachers although they would dispute this vehemently. Benign neglect is pretty close to what happens here. The leadership of the school talks a lot and delivers little; they are so disorganized that they had trouble with even running a hot lunch program. Great dreams, not so great reality. I hope they can pull it together, but they will have to clean house and get some decent administrators who are willing to spend some time in the classrooms and problem solving instead of just bragging about how great they are and raking in consultant fees to teach their 'model'.

K-2 cadre has tremendously improved and based on observation I would strongly agree. Unfortunately, some of last years K-2 teachers were moved to the 3-5 cadre. Which explains why 3-5 cadre for Math is truly....truly a disgrace and horrible! There is absolutely no communication, just deer in the headlights. The literacy teacher I know is decent and my child likes her but communication is lacking alot. The projects teacher is a B+, the curriculum is not concentrated enough based on the applicable grade level and can be overwhelming to a third grader or new student. Aveson does not take ownership or accountability for non performance. 3-5 cadre needs teachers who are assertive, pro-active and deliver results in student. If not, then they should be terminated and not have parents paying tutors to do their job. Great concept Aveson, but remember attitude reflects leadership, take some ownership and be accountable it's ok.

I'm reading these negative reviews, and I have to say, I'm very surprised. My daughter started Aveson last September in Kindergarten. I am so impressed with the education she's getting. The level of literacy and math and science that she's getting is truly amazing. I have friends who's children go to some of the best private schools in Pasadena, and aren't doing anything near the level my daughter's class is doing. I guess I'll have to see if this continues on as she moves in to higher grades, but, as it is right now, I could not imagine her going anywhere else.
