I am a student at aop and can agree with some of the things i have read. Aop is ok , but it can be so much better. Now they are strict and its not making a difference. Students are getting suspended every day for the littlest things like, wearing a pink , black under shirt and more. For a simple things like these you could be suspended for a multiple of days. I think this is the worse rule they ever could of done. Many students miss tones of work and are very behind when they come back to school. I believe if they give us more freedom and made the school fun they would start to see behavior in the students. One thing i don't understand is they want us to wear our school uniforms proudly, but they don't take pride in their school. Aop can look way better.
As a teacher at Academy of Oak Park, I would have to comment on what I have seen since working there. The students are very disrespectful and will say whatever they want to whether there is a teacher present or not. Parents do not discipline their kids and so this is the result. The students are allowed to come to school when they want to even if they don't have a clean shirt or their hair is not done. This is appalling. The students' do not study and are provided with enough study material to pass a test, but when it comes down to it, they fail and want to blame the teacher. They refuse to do homework or projects. Basically, all the students' do is come to class and cause havoc in the classroom. It's just a game to them.
Most of the reviews of this school show unrealistic expectations. AOP is primarily an option to attending school in Detroit. As such, this school has the potential of offering a much better education in a safer, more caring environment. This school is far from perfect, but I would hope to help kids, at the very least, obtain a high school diploma. For those with college potential, I am trying to prepare them for the future by teaching them skills that they should have gotten much earlier. These are 'my kids', and during their time here, I hope to teach them, help them, and, occasionally, provide some fun.

I had been recently hired as a teacher by AOP and recent leave as well. I have never seen such a group of disrespectful young adults in my entire life. They do what they want, whenever they want and continuely get away with it. The formalities and procedures of the school are in need of improvement. Teachers are great and all make a full attempt to teach, but unfortunately you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. I think a lot of this schools problems stem from the parental involvement and leadership of them outside the classroom and school.
