I have several children who have attended, or are attending Basin City Elementary. This school year of 2003-2004 we have a new principal, therefore I do not feel I can rate his performance. Most teachers are adequate, a handful are excellent. Too many, including entire grade levels, are unproductive or lack the ability to challenge students. Additional staff is wonderful, they know our kids. Our school participates in 4th,5th,& 6th Math teams. These teams are comprised of students who pass a test and limited to a small group, some as small as 9 students. There are no other academic extracurricular activities. Soccer, basketball, and forms of baseball are offered. A select choir was put in place last year and has been a wonderful addition to the music dept. Band is offered to 5th & 6th graders. Parent involvement is poor. There is a large Hispanic base, most parents do not speak English. They support their students in award and seasonal assembly presentations (by attending) but are not generally found in the classrooms. Language, work, and finances are a barrier. Our last principal spoke Spanish and communicated well with parents and students when discipline problems occurred (theft, inappropriate behavior, language etc.) He often dealt with problems one on one in homes or on the phone with after school detention. I do not believe problems such as theft etc. were put in a student file.
