My son Ben did his sophomore year ('03-04) at NOVA, after atending Novato High, 3 Years at Hill Middle, 5 years at Olive Elementary. Based on both his particular needs and interests, NOVA allowed and encouraged one of the most positive learning environments in his 10 years in NUSD, although he did well academically every year. By showing him how he could best combine his interests and abilities, NOVA provided the encouragement for Ben to take the CHSPE (high school proficiency) allowing Ben to enter College of Marin at Kentfield as a fulltime student in Sept. 05 .. where he has been getting 4.0 GPA ... and is so much happier about all the challenges of doing classes as diverse as Art History, Calculus, Chemistry and others - all with the goal of entering college (Junior, '06) when his Class of '06 are Freshmen.

I am actually a grandparent of a Nova student at this time. But I have experience with this program since two of my children graduated from the NOVA program. It is in my opinion a place that nurtures its students own learning abilities. There are learning rates that are accepted and yet the student is always encouraged and helped to do more. I feel that as a student gets older they learn, at NOVA, to take responsibility for their own education and have a large part in directing it. This is something that other schools lack, I think. This also helps the student learn, early on, that they are responsible for themselves and what they do in life. To take responsibility for ones own actions is not always easy to teach or learn but NOVA takes steps to do this and I for one appreciate their methods.
