I think that Martinsville Middle School was a great middle school for me. We moved from Detroit to Martinsville when I entered the eighth grade, and I was lagging behind in all of my classes. I told my mom everything that I was learning was new for me, so I didn't understand it. But the teachers helped me so very much and at the end of my eighth grade year, I achieved the presidential educational improvement award. I was pleased about the caring of the teachers for every individual child.

I am extremely disappointed in the quality of education at this school. The school focuses unsuccessfully on bringing remedial students to a passing level of state exams. Passing/advanced students are not allowed to move ahead at a more rapid pace, sacrificing the education of the majority of students. Tracking students is no longer allowed and advanced students are forced to repeat remedial work because they are not provided resources to move forward. Excellence is viewed as elitist and extracurricular educational activities are not supported by the school although sports teams are. Advanced students spend their time helping slower students rather than advancing their own education. All children are forced to spend classes practicing test taking skills, even if they have perfect scores on the state tests. This results in many children having no music, art, or language classes. We would leave if there were any affordable school option in the city.
