I have a child in the Gifted Program and another who is enrolled in the Metroplis magnet, which caters to and nurtures the entrepenuers in our children. The appearance of the aging school may make any concerned parent cautious about sending their child there, but what the school has to offer the students academically, whatever magnet they are in, more than just makes up for it. Some of the teachers could improve their people skills, but the administrative and supportive staff are very caring and helpful when it comes to what is best for your child. It is the perfect school for parents who like to be envolved with their childs educational experience. And it offers a pretty nice selection of extracurriculur activies/sports teams.

The Long Branch Public Schools have done a magnificent job of raising student performance as a result of Whole School Reform. Long Branch is one of 30 at-risk 'Abbott' districts in the state of New Jersey. The success story in Long Branch begins at the elementary level as documented by student achievement in the state assessments. Facts, not opinion: In the spring of 1999, prior to the implementation of the Whole School Reform model Success for All, 33.9% of Long Branch general ed. (not incl. Sp. Ed. & LEP) 4th graders passed the ESPA Language Arts Literacy subtest. In just three years, by the 2002 ESPA administration, 71.2% of the 4th graders passed this test, an increase of 38.3%. Long Branch narrowed the gap to the state average by 13.7% in that time. The math passing rate increased from 35.9% to 55.5% in those years. See Department of Education website.

In my opinion: West End is the best of the 3-4-5 public grade schools in a deeply troubled school district. Like all public school students in Long Branch, every student at West End must take remedial-level classes under the 'whole school reform' program peculiar to failing public school districts in NJ. I suggest that parents obtain and scrutinize the test results, the 'Abbott District' curriculum, and other objective information, before allowing their children to attend any public school in this district -- though if they must, then West End is preferable to other schools in the system.
