I am both a parent of a child attending this school, and a graduate. As a young adult, I benefited greatly from the special opportunities a vocational/technical school offers. Most of the students who are sent to the AVTS already know that their strength is not in academics, but recognize the importance of gaining a hands on skill. For some, the school affords the opportunity to start over in a place where everyone is considered 'ok' as long as he/she is honest and hard working. The shop teachers establish a special bond with their students, and the academic teachers try very hard to inspire many students who have experienced many past failures. My son is advanced, but gets a lot of instruction in classes of 8 or 12 students. He has learned to appreciate all individuals and appreciate their strengths while accepting their weaknesses. True diversity exists at this school.
