In the Portland Public Schools District (PPS), students can attend their neighborhood schools or request transfers to other district schools or programs (called intradistrict transfer), as long as there is space. Nonresident students can request transfers (interdistrict transfer) to Portland schools as well. Deadlines vary but many are in February and March. Students can also attend charter schools; year-round schools; language-immersion schools; and “focus option” schools that offer specialized instruction in such areas as the arts, business and math. Gifted education services are available for elementary, middle and high school students. The district has alternative programs for at-risk youths.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
