Know your school choice options in North Carolina.
In the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), students are assigned to a school based on where they live. Appropriate and reasonable diversity of the student body is also a factor in student assignment. Students may apply to transfer to another school in the district (called intradistrict school choice) or to one of the many magnet programs that offer innovative approaches to learning, including: Creative Arts and Sciences, Gifted and Talented, Active Learning & Technology, International Baccalaureate (IB), Leadership, Montessori, Museums, and year-round programs. Entry into these programs is by lottery. Wake County is a growing area, and new schools are added each year, which means that school-boundary assignment areas change from year to year.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as "in need of improvement" have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
