About the Michigan Education YES! Grades

• In 2007-2008, Michigan used the Education YES! Grades to measure school performance.
• Education YES! Grades are based on student performance on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) and Michigan Merit Examination (MME), whether performance is improving or declining, and the school's self-rating on Indicators of School Performance.
• Schools receive a grade of A, B, C, D-Alert or Unaccredited.

About the Tests

• In 2008-2009 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies.
• The MEAP is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan.
• The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

About the Tests

• The ACT is a national college admission and placement examination. All grade 11 public school students in Michigan must take the ACT. Participation rate for all schools and districts is at or near 100%.
• ACT scores range from a low of 1 to a high of 36 for all subjects except writing, which ranges from 2 to 12. The Composite score is an average of the English, math, reading and science scores.
• Scores for the graduating class of 2009 represent tests taken by grade 11 students in spring 2008. Scores for the graduating class of 2008 represent tests taken by grade 11 students in spring 2007.
• If there are fewer than 10 students at a particular school, the Michigan Department of Education does not report data for that school.
