Know your school choice options in Michigan.
In the Detroit Public School District (DPS), students may enroll in any school in the district (called intradistrict choice or open enrollment) or outside the district (called interdistrict choice) so long as there is space. Certain specialized schools (for example, Detroit High School for the Performing Arts, Detroit Open School, Burton International School) require a separate application. Students may also enroll in charter schools.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as "in need of improvement" have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
