Know your school choice options in Florida.
In the Seminole County Public Schools District (SCPS), there are several options for students who want to attend a school other than their zoned school. Elementary school students living in certain areas can choose from several “cluster” schools (multiple schools assigned to zones of residence) or apply to magnet schools. Middle school students can choose their zoned magnet school or apply to out-of-zone schools. Elementary and middle school children can also attend charter schools.High school students can apply to magnet programs or schools, programs of emphasis or, for 11th- and 12th-graders, school-to-work programs. In some cases (for example, to alleviate overcrowding or promote student diversity based on income eligibility), children can apply to transfer to schools in other districts (interdistrict transfer). Application deadlines vary; some are due in early December. Students with special needs may be eligible to receive a McKay Scholarship to attend a private school.
Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
