Do Uniforms Make Schools Better?

Yes and no, say the experts. The heated debate over school uniforms shows no signs of cooling off.

By Marian Wilde, GreatSchools Staff

For the past decade, schools, parents and students have clashed over the issue of regulating student attire. In 2007, cases involving an anti-Bush T-shirt in Vermont, an anti-gay T-shirt in San Diego and Tigger socks in Napa, California, made their way through the courts, causing many to wonder whether this debate will ever be resolved.

Meanwhile, researchers are divided over how much of an impact - if any - dress policies have upon student learning. A 2004 book makes the case that uniforms do not improve school safety or academic discipline. A 2005 study, on the other hand, indicates that in some Ohio high schools uniforms may have improved graduation and attendance rates, although no improvements were observed in academic performance.

Why Do Some Public Schools Have Uniforms?

In the 1980s, public schools were often compared unfavorably to Catholic schools. Noting the perceived benefit that uniforms conferred upon Catholic schools, some public schools decided to adopt a school uniform policy.

President Clinton provided momentum to the school uniform movement when he said in his 1996 State of the Union speech, "If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms."

The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms

According to proponents, school uniforms:

  • Help prevent gangs from forming on campus
  • Encourage discipline
  • Help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes
  • Help identify intruders in the school
  • Diminish economic and social barriers between students
  • Increase a sense of belonging and school pride
  • Improve attendance

Opponents contend that school uniforms:

  • Violate a student's right to freedom of expression
  • Are simply a Band-Aid on the issue of school violence
  • Make students a target for bullies from other schools
  • Are a financial burden for poor families
  • Are an unfair additional expense for parents who pay taxes for a free public education
  • Are difficult to enforce in public schools

"Yeah, I def. don't think that students should be required to wear school uniforms. A big part of teenagers life is there own style of clothes. You have a life, and they enjoy expressing who they are. It's bad enough for them that they're forced to go to school until the age of 16, in Michigan anyway, so they should atleast be allowed to express their selves. "
11/10/2009:
"I go to a school with uniforms and i personally think they are needed because they improve the attentiveness of students. Everyone who thinks the students cant express themselves with uniforms are wrong becasue dressing up in the latest styles of clothes is going with the crowd and not being an individual. The teachers then should also have to follow a not as strict dress code, but still a dress code so the students are not distracted by the teachers."
11/10/2009:
"I remember back when i was a kid and i would always complain to my friends and family that i have nothing to wear at school because i didnt have the nicest of the name brand clothes. i think that wearing uniforms helps you keep focused on important stuff like school and although you can't express yourself by the way you look, sometimes what really matters if how you express yourself from the inside by letting others know what person you really are. "
11/9/2009:
"School uniforms are stupid if you ask me they won't let you express yourself. I should know I go to a uniform school I don't believe it is fair. It isn't our fault that they're gangs that go by certian colors. But schools act like it is our fault but you look around and teachers wear whatever they want. I say let the students decide we are the ones having to go though not the one putting these rules on us. It should be our choice not there's."

"school uniforms are good ,, student should think about their studying insted of thinking about clothes.... "

"School uniforms may elmiate individuality but they can promte safety, raise academics and less peer pressure. "

"i think that unifroms just make school feel more like a prison... we already have to be at school at a time and eat at a time also leave at the time the tell us. now some schools want to make it feel like prison by making us wear uniforms... uniforms won't even solve anything they just make more problems becase if you dont wear it you cant even enter the school so you well be denyed a education just becasue your not wearing a uniforms and it has to be worn a certain way! so do uniforms help? ask yourself that because while you wear your uniform you well still be the same person and it wont make you smarter so if you were dumb before you well always be dumb. it wont stop violance and drug use. so how do uniforms help? well they only pro about it is that it well save you time in the morning. and also make you look like every one else.. erg uniforms should be banded becus if you cant afford one you well have to wear a loaned one and that well just make kids feel even more poor.! . well i have alot of other things to say but i think i already wrote to much but before i submit SAY NO TO UNIFORMS THEY ARE A WAST OF MONEY AND MAKE SCHOOL FEEL MORE LIKE A PIRSON ERG...."

"--they asked you why u WERE NOT wearing skinny jeans.. .. those arent your friends just because of that if u ask me.. lol.skinny jeans= g- ...not cool. I would love it if my school has uniforms. I go to a public school and their is always pressure to have the nicest designer clothers. Last year wasn't very good because even people who I thought were my friends would ask me why I didn't wear skinny jeans, and I would have to lie and say my mom didnt allow me to wear them. When I went to a private school, I loved wearing uniforms. I didn't think that they suppressed my creativity it made feel just as good as the next person. I really hope that school uniforms become enforced at my school, but unfortunatly I don't think they will be.'"
11/6/2009:
"I think school uniforms are bad because they don't allow students to express themselves and show who they are and what they want people to see them as. Many kids like to express themselves by their clothing and you can tell a lot about someone by the way they choose to dress. Like if someone dresses inappropriately you know they are a prostitute or a w****. Excuse my language. But it is true and someone who dresses in very nice brand name clothes is rich and someone who does not is obviously not. But anyway the "

"i believe that there should not be any school uniforms anywhere.in my old school we had to where uniforms and it was not fun, especially when you are only like five years old. it doesn't matter if you wear a uniform or not people are going to still pick on you probably because of the way you look or the way you act. also it clothes don't make the grades, students do. you can be the smartest person at your school and wear baggy jeans with a shirt that can swallow you whole. along with that, you can have on a uniform and still be not as smart as you was when you wore the regular clothes. well what im trying to say is that school uniforms should be banned from all schools."
11/3/2009:
"school uniforms are just wrong"
11/3/2009:
"there should not be any school uniforms becuase it cost alot for them and clothes on the out side of school it is not right that there is uniforms when i go to school people still get into fights of who has the best uniforms so it really does not matter if there is uniforms of not i seen alot of fights of who had the best looking clothes and uniforms "
11/2/2009:
"It's not fair for people to be forced to wear uniforms just because they're freaked by gang bangers. The thing is gang bangers form because they always have a same target that they rally don't like. Plus they shouldn't be the cause of having the kids get their individuality! I mean seriously, why should kids have to whine about people who don't like them!? i mean it's either they're just shallow freaks or they're insecure. But i believe that we as kids have the fricking right to wear what we want, and not be ashamed of who we are!"

"I am a student at MMS and we have dress code beacuse we have a lot of students in gangs and they whould put guns under there clouse you could not see them unless they tuck there shirts in.Now that we have dress code kids can not hide guns so i am for dress code."
11/2/2009:
"i love school uniformss!"
11/2/2009:
"i am a student and i understand where everyone is coming from with the hole uniform situation. but i personally think that there is no point of uniforms or dress codes in only certain places. like school for example. some schools are worried about kids bringing in guns and/or drugs and carrying them in their back packs or coats when they shouldn’t because they have metal detectors and do mandatory searches. i feel that the way people dress is a way of expressing themselves. some schools say that you should look presentable and this is practice. but when i was in a non-dress code school i did not wear uniforms or have a dress code .. but i needed no practice on how to look presentable because I didn’t need it. its common since. if you have a job or trying to get one you should always look your best dressed up with your shirt tucked in. unless your job doesn’t require that. i think instead of dress codes they should have short term classes in each school about how to loo! k presentable. and during these classes students dress with a code. now the safety issue is understandable. bandanas should be only worn on the head and not out the pocket so there is no sign of gang affiliation unless this student makes gang gestures or so. the right to express who you are is something everyone should have. and dressing a certain way gives you some of that right. but also if you go on a job interview and are dressed a certain way they judge who you are by your appearance. so let us let them judge who we are by our appearances because if they see someone dressed up they think positive thoughts and a lot of the time get the job because of how they dressed. now what if it turns out that they are not as good as they looked. they could have hired someone else that was actually better but because they judged that person by their appearance on looking good and another person who didn’t look good was probably good. so my thing is that we should be able to expres! s ourselves in school because we are not looking to be hired. ! and on top of all of that. high school is the last years we have of being young. and although we are young adults we are still kids and need the time to live the live of being kids or we will never learn how to be adults. look at Michael Jackson. enough said. *Greg Bowden aka R Bunz* "

"i am a student at a public school that does not have school uniforms. at my school there is no pressure to buy important labels or desingers. gangs will still form weather they can wear there clothes or wait until after the week. intruders can still dress up and hide themselves, so maybe you need to just make your schhol security better. because you shouldnt just think 'oh my kid is safe cause they can pick out the intruder when they come in.' you should know that no one is going to get into the school your child attends. and one thing that i think is just redicoulous is the fact that some of you think that it helps school pride. wearing a uniform would not help with pride that is if your child the school you are forcing them to attend. and just so you all know, i am an honor roll student. fourth in my class. i have won the most prestigous award at my past school. and guess what... WE DON'T HAVE UNIFORMS!! it wont make a difference in if your kid applies themself or if they are dumb or smart. and really we dont care if we wear them or not. "

"I think that school uniforms are a good idea! I was from a lower income family and my parents could not afford the designer clothing adn I hated school because I never fit in! Two of my three children had to wear uniforms in elementary and I liked it. They fit in with the rest of the students. No body had the 'I'm better then you attitude' I did not mind spending the extra money on regular clothes and uniforms even when we were considered low income! Children do not loose their individuality. Clothing does not change the indvidual child! When wearing uniforms the children can focus on the school work and not the designer jeans the kid in front of them is wearing. Military, Police, Fireman and Doctors all wear uniforms and they are their own person and they work as a team in their field and they have unity not 'clicks'! Nor do they offend people by what they wear!"
10/27/2009:
"this takes away my freedom. I bought all these clothes and i cant wear them! plus the unforms a made of cheap meterials that can keep people warm in winter. the price for a school bought unifom is $50 to any other price. why should i pay this much for cheap stuuf"
10/19/2009:
"having school uniforms wont stop anyone from being who they are it just takes the chance to be yourself/ organelle from the people. "
10/6/2009:
"well if the uniforms are cute i wouldn't mind at all, im getting tiered of carefully picking out clothe every day"
10/2/2009:
"I believe school uniforms / dress code is dumb . There is no point in it , you are taking away the individuality in the students . Everyone should be aloud to represent themselves by how they dress ! I believe there should NOT be dress code / school uniforms . I Believe dress codes / school uniforms should be a loud in private schools but not public schools ."
09/29/2009:
"I think it would be a good idea to have a dress code because then no one can pick on someone else because of what they are wearing"
09/29/2009:
"i do not believe school uniforms would make a school better. i am a teenager so i know first hand if we had school uniforms the attendance rate would go down and the violence rate would go up having uniforms would be a safety hazard if a student were to attack another student how would the student identify hos or her attacker without school uniforms students will be able to express themselves in a safe way not a dangerous one uniforms are tacky and unflattering i wouldnt be caught dead in one "
09/24/2009:
"wow! uniforms sucks! I'm a 8th grader. I think that kids should be able to wear what they want just not to negative', like guys walking around with there butt out and stuff and well idc about girls cuz there hott! but yeah.."

"this is a great article"
09/22/2009:
"I believe that uniforms wont help, I've been to a school where we had to have uniforms and one where we don't have to. Having uniforms doesn't cut down on the bullying, doesn't stop students from skipping, and isn't cheaper. It gets really annoying as well, because you have to have your uniform a certian way and get in trouble if its not that way. That is my opinion on this matter."
09/14/2009:
"What I like is that our public schools have stricter uniforms than the private schools. It is obviously an attempt to curb violence, how its supposed to do that I do not know."
