Per pupil spending
This shows the total operating expenditures per pupil, as well as a breakdown of the percentage spent by type of expenditure. Instruction includes all activities dealing directly with the interaction between teachers and students, including instruction aided with computers. Instructional-related services include expenditures for educational resources and media, such as resource centers and libraries, curriculum development and instructional staff development. Instructional leadership includes managing, directing, supervising and providing leadership for staff who provide instructional services. School leadership includes directing and managing a school. Support services includes guidance, counseling and evaluation services, social work services and health services. The Other category combines expenditures for food services, cocurricular activities, plant maintenance and operations, security and monitoring and, at the district level, student transportation.

When comparing averages for school-level expenditures note that the state and district averages include all types of schools. For example, a high school's per student expenditure may not be comparable to the state average because the state value includes elementary and middle schools, which typically have lower per student expenditures than high schools. Other factors that may affect comparisons are the experience level of teachers and administrators, the types of instructional programs offered and student characteristics.
