Orlando, FL, May 9, 2002-GreatSchools.net, the nation's leading online guide to K-12 schools, has published a new in-depth guide to Florida schools at www.greatschools.net. An independent nonprofit organization, GreatSchools.net provides parent-friendly school profiles, powerful school search and compare tools, and practical advice about how to navigate the K-12 school system. Florida is the fourth state, after Arizona, California and Texas, to benefit from in-depth coverage on GreatSchools.net.

Public school profiles include information about student achievement, teacher qualifications, class size and school finances, among other areas. Unique interactive features include Match School Needs, which enables parents to identify schools with characteristics that are important to them, and My School Stats, a monthly email newsletter that keeps parents up-to-date on their school's vital statistics. GreatSchools.net also includes basic information about private schools.

Enhanced School Profiles, another unique feature of GreatSchools.net, allow principals to augment state-provided data with information about their school's curriculum and special programs. GreatSchools.net also provides parents with a wide range of advice about the K-12 school system, including articles about how the Florida accountability system works, how charter schools work and how to assess teacher quality.

"Florida parents get a great deal of information about accountability measures and school choice. GreatSchools.net helps parents understand and use this information to benefit their children," said Bill Proctor, executive director of the Council for Education Policy, Research and Improvement and a member of the GreatSchools Florida Advisory Council.

"We are bringing GreatSchools.net to Florida because of the state's incredible interest and energy around school improvement," said Bill Jackson, founder and CEO of GreatSchools.net. "Schools are facing new accountability requirements and parents have more choices," he continued. "GreatSchools.net will help Florida parents sort out what really matters as they seek a great education for their children."

Key support for GreatSchools Florida is provided by Washington Mutual and the Challenge Foundation.
