California Department of Education (CDE): The branch of state government that is responsible for the public school system in California. Both K-12 instruction and the community college system are managed by the CDE. The CDE is headed by an elected superintendent, the Superintendent of Public Instruction (currently Delaine Eastin), and governed by a State Board of Education that is appointed by the governor.
