School Mission
  • Leonard R. Flynn, a multilingual, multicultural elementary school, dedicates itself to maintaining high achievement expectations for all students; cultivate and celebrate the intellectual, creative and humanitarian potential of each student in a caring community that practices mutual respect, embraces diversity and inspires passion for learning through inquiry and critical thinking. Students will leave Flynn Elementary School with intellectual development, international mindedness, a character based on morals and compassion for others and will be world citizens, future leaders and promoters of international peace and understanding.

Instructional Program Highlights
  • L.R. Flynn is completing the process of becoming a candidate school as part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, a rigorous international academic program that focuses on critical thinking, an international viewpoint and looking at the relations between subject areas. ( This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Flynn believes is important for our students. Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) as IB World Schools can offer any of its three academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the Diploma Programme. Activities and Sports
  • Clubs and extra-curricular activities include: Visual Arts, Music & Percussion, Dance, Theater Arts and Spoken Word Programs are offered to every child. Programs vary depending on grade; 3rd-5th graders participate on a voluntary basis in annual Carnaval Parade as part of the Loco Bloco ensemble; Annual Read-A-Thon, Multi-cultural picnic, Science, Literacy, Math and Health Nights, Multi-cultural student performances; Weekly Physical Education with instructor and Soul Shoppe works with the children on communication and conflict resolution.
 
 
Parent and Community Support
  • - Strong parental involvement is encouraged through a variety of activities such as classroom volunteering and tutoring, PTA meetings, and a parent-led visual art program.

Other news or notes
  • -Built in 1924-25, the historic classical style building was designed by architect John Galen Howard who also designed the UC Berkeley campus.
    -In 1977 the exterior walls facing Precita Park became the canvas of local muralists who later founded Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center. The building is graced by many beautiful murals and mosaics.
