In the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD), students are assigned to schools based on their residence, but they may apply to other schools during the open enrollment period in January or February, as long as there is space. Students may apply for transfers within the district (called intradistrict transfer) or outside the district (interdistrict transfer). Children can also attend charter schools. Gifted education services are available for elementary, middle and high school students. The district has “small high schools” that provide specialized curriculum as well as college and career pathways.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
