In the San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD), students can attend their neighborhood school or one of the designated open enrollment schools, as long as there is space; open enrollment runs through the end of January. They can also attend charter schools. Alternative schools are available for at-risk students. Elementary, middle and high school students can participate in gifted education programs. The district also provides special education services.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
