In the Mobile County Public Schools System (MCPSS), students are assigned to schools based on their residence, but they may be able to transfer to other schools if there is a change in guardianship. Nonresident students can apply to attend MCPSS schools but must pay a fee of $1,200. The district has magnet schools that focus on such subjects as the performing arts, math, science and law; applications are due in February. It also provides career/technical education programs for agriscience and technology, business and marketing, health science and other areas.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
